Maxwell Bates
Maxwell Bates was a Canadian painter and muralist whose abstract and figurative work emerged from the postwar period. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, he developed a distinctive vocabulary combining geometric forms with expressive brushwork, often responding to architectural and landscape themes. Based in Calgary and later Victoria, British Columbia, Bates contributed significantly to the development of modernism in Western Canada.
