Maxwell Bates was a Canadian painter and muralist who combined geometric abstraction with expressive brushwork, working primarily in oil and acrylic. His compositions often responded to architectural and landscape themes, establishing a distinctive vocabulary that bridged figuration and abstraction. Based in Calgary and later Victoria, British Columbia, Bates was a significant figure in the development of modernism in Western Canada during the postwar period.
