Why this artist matters now
Wolfgang Tillmans photographs nightclubs, unclothed bodies, and still lifes with a playful, intimate immediacy that conjures a messy, youthful utopia. His omnivorous practice extends to sound installations, set designs, photocopy prints, and direct exposures of photographic paper to light. In 2000 he became the first photographer to win the Turner Prize.
