Sam Durant creates photographs, installations, and mixed-media works that interrogate American history through the lens of civil rights, vernacular culture, and modernism. Based in Seattle, his practice treats popular music, architectural modernism, and political resistance as primary sources for understanding social conflict and identity formation. Rather than presenting history as resolved, Durant's work holds contradictions in view, often juxtaposing archival material with contemporary intervention to expose the unfinished nature of American racial and cultural struggle.
