Sarah Bernhardt as Melisande
1901 · color lithograph
National Gallery of Art

Paul Berthon created color lithographic posters that synthesized flowing organic form with precise typography, defining the commercial aesthetic of Belle Époque Paris. Working across theatrical productions, beverages, and cultural promotions between the 1890s and early 1900s, he developed a refined decorative vocabulary rooted in Art Nouveau principles. His technical command of the lithographic medium and compositional balance positioned his work among the period's most accomplished poster designs. Berthon died in 1909.
