About

Why this artist matters now

Mikhail Matiushin was a Russian avant-garde composer, painter, and theorist active in the early twentieth century. He co-founded the Union of Youth movement in Saint Petersburg and developed a systematic approach to color theory and spatial perception that anticipated abstract art. His work bridged music and visual form, exploring synesthetic relationships between sound and color. Though lesser known than his contemporaries, his theoretical writings on perception and his involvement in Russian modernism shaped experimental practice in the pre-revolutionary period.
