About

Why this artist matters now

Jiří Kolár was a Czech artist born in 1914 who worked primarily in collage and assemblage, pioneering techniques that fragmented and reassembled printed matter, photographs, and found materials into densely layered compositions. Active from the postwar period onward, his practice engaged with themes of memory, cultural fragmentation, and the materiality of the image itself. His innovations in cut-and-paste methodology anticipated later conceptual approaches to appropriation and montage.
