Jean-Michel Atlan was a French abstract painter whose work emerged from the postwar Paris avant-garde. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he developed a gestural, non-representational language marked by dense brushwork and a restrained palette of earth tones and muted colors. His paintings resist narrative or symbolic reading, instead emphasizing the materiality of paint and the act of mark-making itself. Atlan remained largely independent from the dominant movements of his era, maintaining a distinctive visual vocabulary until his death in 1960.
