About

Why this artist matters now

Jean McEwen was a Canadian abstract painter whose large-scale canvases employed gestural mark-making and layered color fields to investigate light and surface luminosity. Working primarily in oil and acrylic from the 1950s onward, he developed a distinctive approach to non-representational painting that positioned him within postwar abstraction's dialogue between gesture and chromatic intensity. His work engaged with the formal concerns of Color Field painting while maintaining a tactile, physical relationship to the canvas surface.
