James Hope was a Scottish-born painter working primarily in oil on canvas during the mid to late nineteenth century. His practice centered on historical and narrative subjects, with particular attention to scenes of conflict and American history. Hope's work was included in the landmark exhibition American Battle Painting 1776, 1918 at MoMA, establishing his significance within the tradition of narrative painting in the nineteenth century. Based in both Scotland and Ireland throughout his career, he maintained a commitment to large-scale figurative composition and historical documentation.
