Ivan Bilibin was a Russian illustrator and stage designer whose ink drawings and watercolors merged Byzantine and folk art traditions with Art Nouveau ornament. Working in the early twentieth century, he created densely patterned borders and intricate figure work for Russian fairy tales and designed sets for the Ballets Russes. His detailed narrative illustrations established a visual language rooted in Russian cultural identity and literary adaptation.
