François Baschet was a French sculptor and sound artist who invented musical instruments from sheet metal, wood, and found materials, creating works that functioned simultaneously as sculpture and acoustic devices. Working in postwar Paris, he developed a distinctive sculptural language in which form and sound were inseparable, often collaborating with his brother Bernard. His metal constructions produced tones through vibration and resonance, challenging the boundary between fine art and musical instrument-making. Baschet's practice anticipated later developments in kinetic and sound art by several decades.
