About

Why this artist matters now

Donatello was a Florentine sculptor who revived classical figural forms and spatial illusionism in marble, bronze, and terracotta. His David, commissioned by the Medici family, was the first freestanding nude male sculpture since antiquity, establishing a template for Renaissance ideals of form and proportion. Working across Florence, Rome, Padua, and Siena during the fifteenth century, he developed techniques in relief carving and bronze casting that fundamentally altered sculptural practice in Italy. His innovations in anatomical accuracy and psychological presence defined Early Renaissance sculpture.
