David Gordon was an American choreographer and dancer whose postwar work redefined the relationship between pedestrian movement and theatrical form. Founding thePickUp Company in 1962, Gordon developed a distinctive practice that extracted quotidian gestures from everyday life and repositioned them within structured dance vocabularies. His approach anticipated later conceptual investigations into the nature of movement itself, creating friction between the banal and the composed. Gordon's legacy shaped generations of choreographers working at the intersection of dance, theater, and social observation.
