Anne Truitt made large-scale painted wood columns, spare vertical forms whose power lies in the precision of their color and the quietness of their geometry. Working in a register adjacent to Minimalism but inflected with personal and emotional content, her sculptures resist the movement's programmatic detachment. Her profile rose sharply following a solo exhibition at André Emmerich Gallery in 1963 and a group presentation at the Jewish Museum in 1966.
