About

Why this artist matters now

Albert Besnard was a French painter, printmaker, and muralist whose work bridged academic figure painting and Symbolist decoration across large-scale public and private commissions throughout France and Europe. Active from the 1870s into the early twentieth century, he brought a luminous, atmospheric quality to both etching and lithography as well as to his easel paintings. His oeuvre encompassed portraiture, mural schemes, and decorative ensembles executed in a distinctly Symbolist idiom.
