A Fashion Icon Lists His Fire Island Retreat

By Mary Elizabeth Andriotis

Fashion designer Michael Kors has listed his beachfront Fire Island retreat for $6.25 million, making it the most expensive home for sale in the exclusive Water Island community. The sprawling home, orchestrated by legendary architect Scott Bromley, boasts a total of five bedrooms, five full baths, and one partial bath.

Situated between the Fire Island Pines and Davis Park, Water Island features only 48 homes next to the Fire Island Seashore. Kors and his husband, Lance Le Pere, purchased the .23-acre property with 200 feet of unobstructed Atlantic Ocean frontage in 2001 for $950,000. In 2014, they turned to Bromley for an overhaul.

“If you want a beach-bum life, you have to find beach bums. And the architect, Scott Bromley—his idea of getting dressed up is if his shorts are clean,” Kors previously told Vogue. Bromley, who is well-known for designing Studio 54, took inspiration from places like Big Sur, Amangiri, and Parrot Cay, along with the craftsmanship of Hans Wegner and George Nakashima.

The one-bedroom main house consists of cedar and teak woods, diffused light, white walls, spa-like bathing spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sliding glass doors. Meanwhile, the four-bedroom, three-bath guesthouse on the neighboring lot has its own bar, sun decks, outdoor kitchen, and a pool, complete with what the listing describes as a “layered, modern aesthetic.”

Meg Smith and Nate Larson of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty have the listing.
