Jean-Michel Frank was a French designer and furniture maker who pioneered a refined modernism distinguished by pale veneers, parchment, plaster, and sharkskin applied to austere wooden frames. Working in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, he rejected ornament entirely in favor of tactile surface and proportion, establishing a stripped-down luxury aesthetic that influenced interior design across Europe and America. His commissions ranged from private residences to the interiors of ocean liners, and his approach to material restraint anticipated post-war minimalism by two decades.
