JB and Bobby

The two figures in JB and Bobby are composed of nearly 20 different images, their bodies reflecting fractured memories. The layered fragments of a green hat, man’s eye, embroidered jacket, bulging bicep, and black Cadillac capture a powerful portrait of two residents from the artist’s Crown Heights neighborhood in New York.

Nathaniel Mary Quinn creates complex visual arrangements that draw on personal narratives and address race and identity in the United States. Using photo references and trompe l’oeil techniques to blur the boundaries between drawing and collage, Quinn activates elusive memories and people from his past, manifesting moments and figures anew.
