Deconstructing and repurposing familiar objects and cultural references to articulate an alternative symbolic language that echoes reality, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa creates experiences and objects infused with memory and fantasy. Ramírez-Figueroa’s work engages with his native Guatemala, exploring themes of heritage and displacement that reflect both intimate lived experiences and extensive historical research. The Guatemala City and Berlin-based artist’s interest in the formal symbolism of objects emerges in rustic ceramics and tactile sculptures, which reveal an anthropological sensitivity to the physical world. In performances that use the artist’s body as a sculptural foundation to recreate the history of Guatemalan architecture, Ramírez-Figueroa reimagines monumental architecture as an appendage, fundamentally changing the implications of the built world and constructed space on the body.
