Painting
Jon Pylypchuk constructs puppet-like sculptural creatures from discarded clothing, stuffed toys, and wood, often arranging them in diorama installations that evoke miniature shantytowns. His figures, which embody violence, illness, and catastrophe, are presented with dark humor and unexpected optimism. A former member of Manitoba's Royal Art Lodge cooperative, he also works in mixed-media collage and works on paper using a scavenged, folkloric vocabulary.
