Wu BiduanWW-1998-141960
1998·Multi-block woodcut printed with water-soluble ink·42.9 × 34.6 cm (16 15/16 × 13 5/8 in.)

<p>This print portrays Lu Xun, a leading figure of modern Chinese literature and father of the Modern Woodcut Movement, seated in an armchair, cigarette in hand. Rendered in crisp, thick lines, this print is reminiscent of the left-wing woodcut prints favored by Lu Xun in the 1930s. Above the figure, Wu Biduan inscribed a well-known poem composed by Lu Xun in 1931, which commemorates the lives of five young members of the League of Left-Wing Writers who were killed by the Nationalist government in Shanghai for their pro-Communist activities.</p>
