Artists' Impressions: Homage to Sister Gertrude

Margo Humphrey was an American printmaker and painter whose work centered on African American identity, social history, and the figure. Working primarily in lithography and mixed media, she created compositions marked by bold color, gestural mark-making, and a direct engagement with portraiture and narrative. Her practice spanned five decades from the 1970s onward, addressing themes of family, community, and cultural memory through a distinctly personal visual language rooted in her experience as a Black woman artist.
