Miguel Piñero

Miguel Piñero was an American playwright and poet born in Harlem, New York, whose work emerged from his experiences in the criminal justice system and Puerto Rican communities of 1970s New York City. His plays, written in vernacular street language and performed in institutional and alternative venues, documented the lives of incarcerated and marginalized people with unflinching directness. Piñero's work broke from established theatrical conventions by centering voices and narratives rarely staged in mainstream American theater.
