Jerome Liebling was an American photographer known for intimate black-and-white portraits and street scenes, primarily of working-class communities in urban America. Active from the 1940s onward, his work captured the textures of daily life with a documentary sensibility inflected by formal precision and psychological depth. Liebling taught photography at Hampshire College and the University of Minnesota, where his pedagogical approach emphasized the ethical dimension of the photograph as a form of witness.
