Huddle

In the 1970s Simone Forti began collaborating with holographer Lloyd G. Cross to create moving, threedimensional holographic versions of several of her dance pieces. Here this 200-degree hologram both documents and performs anew her signature dance construction Huddle, which was first performed in 1961.

In Huddle, several participants link limbs to form a tight group and take turns climbing across the top of the mass and descending to rejoin the cluster. In her choreography, writing, video, and holograms, Forti was instrumental in inserting dance improvisation into postwar art. Responsive to each viewer’s perception and movements, her holograms have a layered and complex relationship to spectatorship.

Artist

Simone Forti is an American artist and choreographer born in 1935, central to postwar experimental performance and movement-based practice. Working across dance, sculpture, and installation, she developed a kinetic vocabulary that treats the body as material and space as a partner rather than a backdrop. Her practice refuses the separation between visual art and choreography, creating participatory environments where movement becomes sculptural.
