Patrick Hughes is a British artist born in 1939 known for paintings and constructions that employ reverse perspective and trompe-l'oeil effects to create optical illusions of spatial depth. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media on panel, his work inverts conventional Renaissance perspective, causing receding planes to appear to advance toward the viewer. His playful manipulation of pictorial space emerged during the postwar period and remains central to his practice. Hughes combines meticulous illusionistic painting with three-dimensional constructed elements, blurring the distinction between painting and sculpture.
