Mother of Man

Barbara Jones-Hogu was an American visual artist and activist whose work emerged from the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Working across painting, printmaking, and mixed media, she created compositions that centered Black identity, cultural pride, and social justice. Her practice was inseparable from her engagement with community organizing and cultural institution-building during the postwar era.
