1968·Aquatint with etching from one plate in black ink on cream wove paper·Image/plate: 44.5 × 30 cm (17 9/16 × 11 13/16 in.); Sheet: 75 × 50.4 cm (29 9/16 × 19 7/8 in.)

This is an impression of Etching One made from the canceled plate. After an entire numbered edition is printed, a printmaker traditionally “cancels” the plate, usually with a simple scratched X, so that no more impressions may be made. Bontecou, instead, elegantly canceled her plate with a web-like pattern radiating from the print’s center, a design reminiscent of patterns in her finished compositions.

Sculpture

The work of abstract sculptor Lee Bontecou evades easy categorization. Although not affiliated with any artistic movement, her objects share similarities with Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism and evoke early Cubist sculpture. Her sculptures are typically defined by dark cavernous voids at their centers, and posses an industrial, seemingly mechanical aesthetic.
