Howard Mehring was an American painter associated with the Washington Color School movement of the 1960s. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, he developed a distinctive approach to color abstraction characterized by bold, flat fields of pigment and geometric compositions. His practice emerged alongside the postwar abstraction of the Eastern seaboard, engaging directly with questions of pure color and spatial illusion.
