Benode Behari Mukherjee
Benode Behari Mukherjee was an Indian painter and printmaker whose work synthesized modernist abstraction with Bengali artistic traditions. Active from the 1930s through the 1970s, he developed a distinctive visual language combining geometric forms with calligraphic gesture, often drawing on themes of spirituality and the Indian landscape. His prints and paintings occupied a singular position in postwar Indian modernism, neither purely abstract nor narrative, but atmospheric and contemplative in mood.
