<p>For this working proof, Bontecou proposed changes directly on the paper, on top of the printed image. These changes are brushed on with tusche (lithographic ink) which, when thinned, can appear as several shades of gray. She applied the tusche so densely that the sheet is more of a drawing than a print. Bontecou later completed the design by printing a second lithographic stone on top of the first.</p>
