Photography

Christer Strömholm was a Swedish photographer whose black-and-white work documented marginalized urban figures and social outsiders with unflinching intimacy. Active from the 1940s onward, he developed a distinctive approach to street and portrait photography that rejected journalistic distance in favor of sustained engagement with his subjects. His images of prostitutes, transvestites, and working-class communities in Stockholm and beyond established him as a pivotal figure in postwar Nordic photography. Strömholm's formal precision and psychological depth transformed documentary practice into a form of social witness.
