Gautama and Bodhisattvas

Shiko Munakata was a Japanese woodblock printmaker whose bold, expressionistic works combined traditional ukiyo-e techniques with modernist abstraction. Working primarily in the postwar period, he developed a distinctive approach to the woodblock medium, creating prints marked by vigorous line work and densely layered imagery that drew from Buddhist and folk art traditions. His prints gained significant international attention and influenced contemporary printmaking across Europe and America.
