Bernard Childs was an American printmaker and painter whose work emerged from postwar abstraction and geometric forms. Working primarily in etching, aquatint, and oil painting, he developed a distinctive vocabulary of interlocking planes and spatial layering that bridged constructivism and modernist abstraction. Based in New York, Childs created compositions that emphasized the materiality of print surfaces and the interaction of light across deeply worked plates. His practice remained formally rigorous throughout his career, resisting narrative content in favor of pure visual investigation.
