The Vision

Theora Hamblett was an American painter born in Mississippi in 1895. Working primarily in oil, she developed a distinctive folk modernist approach that merged narrative figuration with symbolic abstraction. Her compositions often drew from Southern rural life, dreams, and personal memory, rendered in a flattened, decorative style that resisted conventional academic perspective. Hamblett maintained an independent practice throughout her career, remaining based in Mississippi until her death in 1977.
