A. Aubrey Bodine was an American photographer known for his distinctive black-and-white images of the Chesapeake Bay region and working waterfronts. Active during the postwar period, Bodine developed a precise, formally composed documentary approach that elevated vernacular maritime subjects to the register of fine art. His photographs balance technical mastery of light and tonal range with an anthropological interest in labor, landscape, and regional identity. Bodine's work established a model for socially engaged American photography in the mid-twentieth century.
