James Gleeson developed surrealist landscapes populated by classical figures and biomorphic forms that conjure apocalyptic worlds shaped by his anxiety over twentieth-century violence and historical brutality. His meticulously painted scenes merge geological abstraction with the macabre, creating seductive yet disturbing visions of retribution and foreboding. Works are held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, and National Gallery of Australia.
