Horace Pippin was an American painter known for vivid, densely composed scenes of domestic life, Biblical narratives, and historical subjects rendered in bold color and flattened perspective. A self-taught artist who began painting in the 1930s, Pippin developed a distinctive style rooted in folk tradition and memory rather than academic training. His work combined narrative clarity with a formal directness that anticipated mid-century American figurative painting. He exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art and gained recognition during his lifetime despite working outside institutional art circles.
