René Portocarrero was a Cuban painter whose work synthesized modernist abstraction with Caribbean colonial imagery, particularly the decaying architecture and ornamental detail of Havana's historical quarters. Working primarily in oil and mixed media from the 1940s onward, he developed a distinctive visual language that layered geometric abstraction over baroque decorative motifs, creating a tension between formal restraint and exuberant ornamentation.
