Madeleine Vionnet
Fashion Design
Madeleine Vionnet was a French couturier whose mastery of the bias cut revolutionized twentieth-century garment construction. Working from her atelier in Paris from 1912 onward, she developed a technique of cutting fabric on the diagonal grain, allowing cloth to cling and flow to the body with unprecedented fluidity. Her innovations in draping and seaming eliminated the need for restrictive corsetry and transformed the silhouette of modern dress. Vionnet's approach was architectural in precision yet organic in effect, establishing principles of pattern-making that remain foundational to fashion design.
