The Fountains

Agnes Pelton was an American modernist painter working primarily in watercolor and oil, creating luminous abstractions and visionary landscapes from the 1920s onward. Her work emerged from an engagement with mysticism and the California desert, particularly around Cathedral City, where she settled in 1941. Pelton developed a distinctive vocabulary of floating forms, soft color harmonies, and ethereal light effects that occupied a space between figuration and pure abstraction. Her paintings often suggest spiritual or metaphysical states rather than literal representation.
