Photography
Jacques-Henri Lartigue was a French photographer who documented the leisure, fashion, and automobile culture of the Belle Époque and early twentieth century with a spontaneous, handheld aesthetic that predated the development of 35mm photojournalism. Working from childhood with small cameras, he captured fleeting moments of everyday elegance and movement with a freshness that distinguished his work from the formal studio photography of his era. His archive of over 130,000 photographs spans nearly nine decades and constitutes an unparalleled visual record of French upper-class life from 1900 onward.
