Chess Set

Josef Hartwig was a German sculptor and woodcarver active in the early twentieth century. Working primarily in carved wood and stone, he developed a modernist formal language that simplified organic and geometric forms into essential sculptural statements. His practice bridged Expressionist and Constructivist sensibilities during a period of significant aesthetic experimentation in Central Europe.
