Against a ground echoing the red, white, and blue diagonal lines of the British Union Jack flag, soldiers march and stand at attention. A row of the guards’ distinctive bearskin caps and the tips of their swords raised in front of their hidden faces punctuate the bottom of the image.
Trooping the Colour is a ceremony that marks the official birthday of the British monarch. Each June, parading soldiers, horses, and musicians march down the Mall to Buckingham Palace in London. Paine captured the pomp and precision of the occasion in an understated way.
