Guy Pène du Bois
Painting
Guy Pène du Bois was an American painter and illustrator who depicted the social life and leisure activities of the urban upper and middle classes in the early twentieth century. Working primarily in oil and watercolor, his compositions captured restaurant scenes, theater interiors, and fashionable gatherings with a sharp observational eye and restrained palette. His figures, rendered with anatomical precision and cool emotional distance, reveal the manners and anxieties beneath the surface of cosmopolitan society. Du Bois remained committed to representational painting throughout his career, resisting abstraction.
