George Luks painted urban scenes and portraits with a gestural, energetic brushwork that captured the vitality of early twentieth-century New York. A member of the Ashcan School, he depicted street vendors, boxers, and working-class subjects with psychological acuity and formal sophistication, rejecting academic refinement in favor of raw, immediate observation.
