The Unemployed, from Krüppel

Here Heinrich Hoerle depicted an unemployed veteran who has lost both of his hands. An Iron Cross 1st Class medal is pinned to his left hip in recognition of his military service. His blank, far-off stare shows that he is psychologically elsewhere, with little awareness of this life back home. With his body tense and his hat held under his elbow, the wounded soldier begs for money.
