Le manuscrit trouvé dans un chapeau

André Salmon was a French poet and long-time friend of Pablo Picasso. He belonged to the group known as bande à Picasso or Picasso’s gang, creatives who influenced the establishment of Cubism as a movement.

In 1919, after the conclusion of World War I, Salmon and Picasso collaborated on Le manuscrit trouve dans un chapeau (Manuscript found in a hat). For his part, Salmon wrote a prose poem—a combination of poetry, theatrical dialogue, and fragmented prose—that tells a semi-autobiographical account of his chameleon-like ways of navigating artistic circles in France and how these encounters influenced his work. Paired with Picasso’s evocative line drawings, the two elements complement one another to create a narrative in which characters multiply and condense throughout, culminating in a story resembling a very vivid dream.
