Agnes Lawrence Pelton was a German-born painter who developed a distinctive abstract visual language rooted in spiritual experience and the American Southwest landscape. Working primarily in oils and watercolor, she created compositions of floating geometric forms and luminous color fields that anticipated mid-century abstraction. Active from the early 1900s through the 1950s, Pelton synthesized modernist formal reduction with a sustained engagement with transcendental philosophy and desert light. Her work occupied a singular position between European abstraction and American regionalism, remaining largely unrecognized until decades after her death.
